Indigenous Hawaiian Doula Scholarship Application

Doula of color are under-represented in the birth world. Because the maternal infant and mortality crisis in the United States disproportionately impacts Indigenous women, we've chosen to focus our scholarship dollars on supporting an indigenous Hawaiian doula who otherwise would not be able to attend this training.

One 50% scholarship is available for someone who wants to attend the November 10-13, 2023 doula workshop. (value $379)

Birth Doula Workshop

Although being an indigenous Hawaiian is one requirement, it is not the only requirement. These scholarships are specifically meant for people who would not otherwise be able to attend the training because their financial resources are limited. If you have the means to pay for the full training, or if you have limited resources but are not of Hawaiian heritage, we'd love to work with you on a payment plan instead.

This is a DONA Approved Birth Doula Workshop, and the training includes three elements that you need for certification. If you attend the training, do you plan to complete the additional work (reading, attending births, etc.) to become certified with DONA International?*

Do you plan to make doula work your full-time career, part-time or to use it to enrich your work in another field? Please let us know if you're a midwife student or plan to attend midwifery school.*
Doula work can be challenging for the doula and their family. It involves being on-call, being awake for many hours without sleep, having a flexible schedule, being able to leave on short notice and be gone for long periods of time, and having reliable transportation and childcare. Also, if you currently have a job that you plan to keep, you will need to be able to miss work occasionally to attend a birth. Will any of these challenges prohibit you from working as a doula? How will you manage this kind of schedule?*
This is a four-day doula training that runs 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day (Sunday morning off), November 10-13, 2023. You must attend all four days. Are you able to clear your schedule to participate in the entire workshop? Do you have transportation, childcare, etc. to attend for all four days?*

This is a 50% scholarship for our training, which normally costs $759. If you receive the scholarship, your tuition fee of $379.50 will be due by November 1. Are you able to make that payment?*

Scholarships are non-cash awards offered to people who otherwise would not be able to attend the doula training workshop. Scholarships are granted to those that we identify as having the greatest potential to make an impact in their work as a doula, and those with the greatest need for financial assistance. Decisions are at the sole discretion of Heart Soul Birth Pros, and all decisions are final. If you do not receive a scholarship, we would still welcome you for the workshop and you will be offered a payment plan to attend.

Scholarships cover a partial cost of the workshop fee, and do not cover books, materials, lodging, meals, transportation, which must be covered by the participant. Future certification costs through DONA International are not included.

This is not a work-study scholarship, it is a gift to you. We only ask that you receive it with a commitment to give back to your community and as a collaborative member of the doula community. If you find yourself in a time of financial abundance in the future, you might consider contacting us to donate scholarship funds to support another doula.

In agreeing to the scholarship policy, you agree to cover your portion of the workshop cost if you are granted this 50% scholarship, as well as any additional costs associated with the training.
