We're here to help you get a quick start!
Your first steps toward supporting Medicaid families.
Although the system isn't perfect, the option for doulas to bill Medicaid is a blessing for our state. Traditionally, under-resourced families in Michigan have had limited access to doulas. Their options were to work with a volunteer doula (hard to find and hard on the doula), or find a doula through a nonprofit organization (few and far between). Now, we have the option to bill Medicaid when we support these families. The process can be complex, but we're here to help you through the first steps.
This live, two-part webinar will give you a "quick start" toward your goals as an individual doula who wants to bill Medicaid. We offer the webinar in two parts about a week apart because some elements in part one need to be accepted and processed before moving ahead.
Q: Is the webinar recorded?
A: No, you have to attend live, both sessions. If you can't commit to both dates/times, please wait for a later webinar. If you cannot make part two of the webinar, you'll need to pay separately for a private make-up session. You cannot join a later group session for just part two, as this makes it disjointed for participants and the trainer.
Q: Am I eligible to accept Medicaid in Michigan?
A: If you took a birth or postpartum doula training with Heart Soul Birth Pros, that was a DONA International approved training and you can bill Medicaid. The state of Michigan has a list of all approved trainings that qualify a doula to bill Medicaid.
Click here to see the list of approved trainings (after you click, look for the link under step 1). If your training is not on the list, you cannot accept Medicaid.
What's included:
Video - Terminology and Process Overview
• Before your live webinar, watch our video that gives a high-level overview of how the Medicaid billing process works in Michigan and explains terminology we'll be using in the live sessions.
Part One - LIVE
• Assistance filling out the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Doula Registry application, and direction on how to submit it.
• Assistance navigating the NPPES system and applying for your NPI number.
• Assistance creating a SIGMA account with MDHHS, and how to get your account set up to accept MDHHS payments (for straight/secondary Medicaid clients - a small number of Medicaid beneficiaries, primarily those who have another primary insurance).
Part Two - LIVE
• Assistance creating an MDHHS account, gaining CHAMPS access, and finally submitting your CHAMPS application.
• A basic walk through of how to submit claims for straight/secondary Medicaid clients in CHAMPS. (Secondary Medicaid beneficiaries have another primary insurance but are also covered by Medicaid. These clients can be billed directly through the state's system.)
• A brief explanation of how the MDHHS Medicaid Billing and payment systems work, and what to expect.
• Resources to further credential with Medicaid Health Plans (most Medicaid beneficiaries are enrolled in a health plan).
What's NOT included:
• Health Plan credentialing. Each area of the state has its own unique mix of Michigan Medicaid Health Plans, each with its own credentialing process for doulas. We'll show you how to identify which health plans are available in the counties you serve. After that, we suggest asking physician or midwife offices to see which plans are the most popular for families in your area.
• Actual billing how-to for individual health plans, as they all vary (there are nine health plans in the state of Michigan). Once you are credentialed with a health plan, you'll need to learn that plan's billing process. We'll provide you with some resources that can help you on this journey, or you can hire a biller to assist.
• How to set up or run your business. This webinar is for a very specific purpose, and we stay focused on completing the steps for Medicaid setup.
• Support for groups or agencies. This webinar is designed for individual doulas who want to become Medicaid providers. There is an entirely different process for agencies and groups, which we do not cover in this webinar. (Feel free to reach out by email if you want separate coaching for your group or agency.)
Requirements for Medicaid setup:
• Must be over 18 years of age
• Must have graduated from High School (or equivalent)
• Must have completed an MDHHS-approved doula training
What you need for the webinar:
Please have these items ready and easily accessible before the webinar. You will not be able to participate or complete the steps we walk you through unless you have these things in hand.
